What are the Benefits of Executive Transition?

Through over ten years of research, practice and investments by national foundations including the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation and a growing number of local foundations, executive transition services have developed and are now available to nonprofit organizations and their leaders. This set of services and practices is beginning to show promising results in reducing the risks and increasing the gains during leadership change.

Follow-up research by San Francisco-based CompassPoint Nonprofit Services with organizations that used their executive transition services[1] showed:

  • Agency Wellness Improved with nearly all of the agencies surveyed saying that they were "healthier" or "much healthier." Nine out of ten reported that their budgets increased. Two-thirds mentioned that their board is stronger as a result. Nine out of ten reported staffing improvements.
  • Organizational Capacity Increased with one-third serving new populations, nearly half offering new programs and another third increased the number of clients.

Neighborhood Reinvestment, a national network of 215 local organizations serving 1,700 communities, began offering executive transition services to its members over a decade ago.  Executive transition services and other training and capacity-building assistance resulted in the following improvements in the network of organizations served:

  • Boosted executive director tenure from 4.3 years to 5.7 years.
  • Increased the number of “healthy” organizations from 61 percent to 89 percent.
  • Nearly tripled community investment from $146.7 million to $418.9 million.

[1] The data was collected twelve months after the new executive started service.

"Nine out of ten executive transition clients reported increased budgets and staffing improvements."
