Director of Development
The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay

The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, based in Tampa, Florida, is seeking a director of development to lead the fundraising efforts and help raise the public profile of this 29-year old premier chorus located on Florida’s beautiful west coast. This is an ideal opportunity for a fundraising generalist who is interested in a 2/3- to 3/4-time position.
The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, under direction of Music and Artistic Director, Richard Zielinski, is an auditioned, highly select 150-voice volunteer chorus embracing a broad representation of singers from the entire Tampa Bay area. Founded in 1979 by Dr. Robert Summer, the Master Chorale was later incorporated in 1988 as a 501(c)(3). Designated in 1989 as the “Principal Chorus of The Florida Orchestra,” the Master Chorale is featured annually in the Orchestra’s Masterworks Season. In 1999 the Master Chorale was appointed as “Artist in Residence” at the College of Visual and Performing Arts School of Music at the University of South Florida.
The organization serves Tampa Bay and west central Florida with a mission to advance the art of choral music by performing great works of the past, commissioning and performing new literature, and sharing the joy and power of choral music with new and existing audiences and singers. Since 2004 the Master Chorale has had American conductor and composer Dale Warland present artistic and administrative workshops as they prepared for concerts and recordings. During the past decade the organization has commissioned some of the most important contemporary composers for works for The Master Chorale including Eric Whitacre (Lux Aurumque), Paul Basler (Missa Kenya), Eleanor Daley (Listen to the Sunrise), Libby Larsen (Whitman’s America), Stephan Paulus (Sing Unto God), and Alice Parker (The Rock and the River).
The Master Chorale is governed by a sixteen-member board of directors. Current staffing includes five full and part-time positions. The organization’s current budget is approximately $350,000, but is expected to grow under the leadership of the new executive director. Over the past 28 seasons, the Master Chorale has performed and premiered many symphonic choral works under the direction of Richard Zielinski, Founding Music Director Emeritus Robert Summer, Jo-Michael Schiebe, Dale Warland, Jahja Ling, Robert Shaw, Stefan Sanderling, Grant Llewellyn, John Nelson and Julius Rudel, The Master Chorale has made four recordings, including holiday recordings with the Florida Orchestra, “A Musicological Journey Through the Twelve Days of Christmas,” and with world-renowned Empire Brass entitled, “Christmas with the Master Chorale and Empire Brass.” The Master Chorale made its first appearances abroad during the 1996 season in critically acclaimed performances at London’s Westminster Cathedral and King’s College Chapel in Cambridge with the Bach Choir of London under the batons of Sir David Willcocks and Robert Summer. In the summer of 2001, the Master Chorale was invited to perform the Berlioz Requiem with the London Symphony Orchestra and Bach Choir of London, under the direction of Sir Colin Davis, in London’s cherished music festival. In recent years members of the Master Chorale traveled to Europe with their Music Director, Richard Zielinski, to present concerts at the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria, and in Warsaw, Krakow, and Wroclaw collaborating with the Szczecin Technical Academic Choir and Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to its concerts, The Master Chorale pursues its mission through the following programs:
· The Master Chorale Outreach Ensemble: Presentation of concerts of traditional and lighthearted choral programs to a variety of audiences who are unable to attend concerts at our performance venues.
· The Master Chorale Young Conductors Apprentice Program: Each season the Master Chorale funds a graduate assistantship in the area of Choral Conducting within the USF School of Music. This student serves as an assistant to the Music Director, receives private conducting lessons, and learns the administrative duties of a music director.
· Festival of Voices: High school music directors send their choirs to this 2-day workshop conducted by the Music Director. Students sing side-by-side with members of USF choral ensembles and The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay.
The Position
This is new position. The board is open to hearing from candidates were interested in at least a two-thirds time position up to and including full-time employment.
The director of development will be responsible for all aspects of fundraising for the organization and will work with the board, artistic director and other staff in implementing the fundraising strategy.
Toward this end, the board of directors has identified near-term priorities for the first 12-18 months of the director of development’s tenure to include:
· Work with the board to augment the current fund development plan, including goal setting and evaluation.
· Work with the board leadership to expand participation on the fund development committee.
· Implement the fundraising plan in partnership with the board and fund development committee.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the president of
the board, key responsibilities include:
· Developing the overall fundraising strategy, including goal setting and evaluation, in partnership the development committee
· Implementing the fundraising plan.
· Researching new funding prospects (corporate, foundation, government and individuals).
· Tracking proposals, grants and contributions. Preparing required funder reports.
· Assisting the Board in cultivating new donors; guiding/coaching the Board in its role toward achievement of the organization’s development goals.
· Maintaining and expanding the donor database including gift documents and donor recognition.
· Developing and managing special events.
· Collaborating with other team members on the organization’s marketing and public relations efforts.
