Customized Training

TransitionGuides offers customized training on a variety of executive transition topics for foundations, nonprofit associations and other groups.  Please call us at (301) 439-6635 for more information.

Here is a sampling of topics from recent training events that TransitionGuides has offered:

  • Prepare, “Pivot” and Thrive:  Executive Transition Management Leads to Good Outcomes
A change in executive leadership is one of the most important, challenging and powerful opportunities a nonprofit organization will face. This presentation shares the key lessons about how to effectively manage a leadership transition.  The centerpiece is a three-phase process that is designed to help boards of directors find an executive who fits the current and future leadership of their organization, and successfully build a powerful, forward-focused board-executive team.

  • Executive Transition Management: A Promising Capacity Building Strategy
Aimed at funders and management support organizations, this session provides a grounding in how a change in executive leaders is, in reality, a capacity building opportunity.  It then builds on that base, demonstrating how to use executive transition management to help nonprofits minimize the risk involved in these transitions and capture the opportunities.

This session can also include information about how the "age wave" of boomer retirements will affect the nonprofit sector and what can be done to make the most of the intergenerational transfer of leadership that will begin on an immense scale in just a few years as Baby Boomers begin to reach retirement.

  • Founders and Seasoned Executives: Sustaining Yourself as a Nonprofit Executive
Being a nonprofit organization executive director is one of the most exciting and challenging career choices. For a nonprofit executive, taking care of yourself and your organization is a true balancing act. In this interactive work session, we will explore stress, renewal and self-care for busy nonprofit executives.  In addition, we explore the needs and aspirations of founders and long-term executives as well as the emerging thinking about leadership succession planning to help executives prepare their organizations, in a non-threatening way, for their eventual departure – even if it's several years away.

  • The Board-Executive Social Contract
One of the most crucial, if not the most crucial, relationship within a nonprofit is the working relationship between the board and the executive director. Drawing on case study research of governance in highly effective nonprofits, this interactive workshop looks at the key benefits and major ingredients of a healthy board-executive social contract. A four-part contracting process is offered as tool to breathe new vitality into existing relationships or forge new team bonds between a recently appointed executive and his/her board.
