Our Services for Foundations

Because nonprofit executive transitions are inevitable, risky, and growing in number and complexity, they are a threat to the programs and investments of foundations and other financial supporters. Because they also are among the most powerful capacity building and leadership renewal opportunities for organizations, they also offer enormous untapped potential. In a time of terrific competition for often shrinking resources, an investment in executive transitions offers sustained and improved organizational effectiveness among “mission-critical” grantees.

Ten years of research and development about how to effectively use executive transition as a pivotal capacity building moment--funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation and a host of local foundations--has resulted in an executive transition management capacity building model that works.

Tom Adams and the senior associates of TransitionGuides have led the development of executive transition management as a capacity building practice and have a track record of working with national and local foundations. Tom currently serves as consultant and project manager for the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Baltimore Community Foundation and is consulting with a recently formed network of New England funders.

Our services for foundations and other funders include:

  • Presentations of research findings and best practices on executive transition management and their positive impact on performance of grantee organizations;

  • Consultation on how to evaluate transition risks and opportunities present among your grantees or among a selected group of mission critical grantees;

  • Design, management and/or delivery of executive transition services for a designated community or network of organizations;

  • Knowledge-building research on nonprofit leadership and transitions (e.g. founder and long-term executive transitions, generation change/baby boomer exit and its impact, evaluation and outcomes, diversity and transitions);

  • Customized conference sessions and workshops for founders and long-term executives, transition consultants, new executive directors, interim executives and foundation executives and program officers.

TransitionGuides also offers a link to participating foundations and other funders to the TransitionGuides website and its resources as well as sites tailored for specific funder grantees. For more information about services for foundations, call Tom Adams (301) 439-6635.
